It is hard to decide what to talk about the show was that good! This was our largest car count, most classes were full or almost full. The competition gets tougher and tougher.

No CaptionAll Motor - To start off Butch Kemp has been dominating the class with 3 wins out of 4 races. He got another 50 lb trophy making him 100 lbs heavier than minimum weight. That did not seem to effect his performance too much as he still ran 8.75 probably lifting before the finish line. In the semi finals Butch did a 1/8th mile wheelstand dragging the bumper losing to Bruce Sneed. Howdy scorched his tires in the semi finals sending the Shark to the finals. Bruce goes .003 on the tree but it was not enough for the Shark getting his first win of the season.

No CaptionDrag Radial - Jason Lee was #1 qualifier two races in a row with the awesome wheelstanding 1985 Mustang. Jason was in trouble during second round when his wheelie was getting out of control. He got it back on the ground and still almost won the round! Mike Floeter was back after crashing in the April race. His luck did not change in August, as he broke the motor during qualifying. Tim Huspen was driving a different car taking the #2 qualifying spot.

No CaptionX-Treme Street Bike - Tim O'Neil has parked his bike and teamed up with Ken Compton. Ken's bike has the best of the best you can buy and it put Tim in the #1 spot during qualifying with a 7.45 at 191 mph! Reigning Champion Ronnie Mitchell has put Phil Stoll from Chicago back on his Turbo Hayabusa. Phil had the best mph during qualifying, 7.57 at 193.11! No wheelie bars, street legal tires, these guys are NUTS, but very fun to watch. We also had Kent Stotz and his factory sponsored Honda Turbocharged Blackbird. Kent went to the semi finals. By the end of the night the temperature had dropped a lot and the air was GREAT! Phil Stoll went 7.40's in 2nd, 3rd and the final round. His best pass of the night was in the finals, 7.41 at 196.33 mph.

No CaptionRun What Ya Brung - 16 cars trying for a 8 car field with a bump spot of 7.08. Now keep in mind that there is a IHRA National Event in Grand Rapids that pulled 6-8 cars that normally run our series also. So the first pair of cars is in the waterbox as we play the National Anthem. Right as it is ending the drivers are instructed to fire up and do their burnouts. Barry Ballard and his 1963 APD Sponsored Corvette burst into flames while doing his burnout. Barry's car was leaking fuel and the whole car was covered. The fire proceeded to make its way back to the waterbox! Between the on-board fire system and our starters quick actions no damage was done to the car! It was amazing.

Brian Robbins and the Skinny Kid Race Cars Hurst Oldsmobile took the #1 spot with a 6.49 at 224 mph. This car has only been out two other times this season due to engine problems and had won the Super Chevy Nitro Coupe class at Indy and the NMCA race last weekend at Route 66. Brian's passes down the track were everything but straight! In the finals against John Powers it finally stuck and he ran a career best of 6.26 at 226 mph.

No CaptionOutlaw 10.5 - We had 19 cars enter this race. There was a pretty big gap between #1 and #16. Last month's Runner-Up Jason Hall was back and qualified with a 8.12 taking the #5 spot. In front of him was Dean Parker #4, Brad Tyson #3, Mark Southwell #2 and Dan Millen #1. We had a little drama on Dan Millens run. In the third round of qualifying Dan Millen (who had not been down the track yet) was paired up with a blue Mopar driven by Mike Rathsburo. Mike double bulbed the tree before Dan was staged. When Dan went pre-stage Mike moved forward and was no longer staged. Dan staged and the tree did not come down because it is AutoStart and was set for a pair of cars. So 20 seconds later the tree would have came down. Dan ended up leaving several seconds after staging. Normally the tree comes down in 1.3 seconds. We did not catch that in the tower fast enough to overide the system. It was just one of those things that happen. Was it fair for Dan or any other driver in that circumstance? NO After reviewing the video and talking to all of the officials we confirmed what had happened. At that point we told Dan to bring the car up ASAP and we would give him another chance just like we did Matt's car. At a disadvantage of hot-laping his car, he still pulled off #1! Mark Southwell went to the finals against Millen with side by side 7 second passes.

Another great Milan Dragway heads-up event in the books

(7-2-2006) - Who would have thought that the trend of Heads Up Racing could get any better than the Milan Dragway program.  Each month is another record breaking crowd sitting on the edge of their seats to see the big dogs of racing.  The “Skinny Kid Race Car’s Head’s Up” series brings in seven second, nitrous-popping street cars.  Bumper dragging wheel stands are almost every run.

After the racers had test runs to work out the kinks the stands filled up with the anxious diehard race fans.  The weather and track conditions were perfect.  One of the highlights at the beginning of the night was Jim Filipowski, Brighton, Michigan, managed to break the eight second barrier in the VP Fuels Drag Radial class.  Filipowski finished with an impressive 7.94 E.T. at 182.23 miles per hour! That put Filipowski in the top spot in the VP Fuels Drag Radial class.

The All Motor class and the 10.5 Outlaw class both had full 16 car fields.  After the qualifying times were set Butch Kemp, Washington, Michigan in the Holbrook All Motor Class walked away with the number one qualifying spot with an 8.6051 at 160 miles per hour.  Not too far behind was Kirk Ferris, South Lyon, Michigan, with an 8.7317 at 162.57 miles per hour.

The Outlaw class number one spot was Dan Millen, Dearborn Heights, Michigan, whose mustang dropped the low ET to a 7.1250 at 207.20 miles per hour.   Newcomer Rick Rosella from Toronto, Canada took second at 7.3079 at 196.55 miles per hour.

Tim O’Neil, Kent, Ohio, returned to the number one qualifying spot in the C&H Collision Motorcycle class with a 7.6650 at 192.39 miles per hour.  Ronnie Mitchell, Belleville, Michigan, jumped up from number three last month to number two with a 7.7556 at 190 miles per hour.

The Dynoserve Run What Ya Brung class number one qualifier was Chris Holbrook, from Livonia, Michigan, with a 6.6443 at 213 miles per hour.

After a full night of exciting racing action the finals came down to Dynoserve Run What Ya Brung class, Brian Tiffe from Middleburg, Ohio and John Powers, Ypsilanti, Michigan. Powers went a .0450 red giving the win to Brian Tiffe.

The C&H Collision Motorcycle finals were the number one qualifier Tim O’Neil and number three qualifier Mike Bayes, South Lyon, Michigan.  Both drivers came off the tree with close reaction times.  O’Neil took the win with a 7.6429 at 193.13 miles per hour.

VP Fuels Drag Radial class finalists were Mike Brown, Huber Heights, Ohio and number two qualifier Jason Lee, Maumee, Ohio.  Jason Lee  had a red light in the final, giving Mike Brown the win. Mike went into a huge wheelstand and idled down the track with his win light on. Brown forgot to got to the scale and was disqualified. Jason Lee toke the win.

Holbrook Racing Engines All Motor class finalists were the number one and number two qualifier Kirk Ferris and Butch Kemp.  Only ten thousandths of a second separated these drivers at the starting line.  Butch finished with an 8.6019 at 159.04 miles per hour to Ferris’s 8.7550 ET at 158 miles per hour.

The last class of the evening was the Wheel to Wheel Outlaw class.  The excitement started before the first round of eliminations when a couple drivers did not return and the alternates were awarded the spot.  During the second round of eliminations Rick Rosella crossed the center line and put Jason Hall into the next round.  As the final pair of the evening Hall and Millen prepared to leave the staging lanes, Hall started his car and had a huge nitrous blast.  Hall was unable to start the car to run his final pass.  Millen lined up alone on the starting line and finished the night off with a 7.0669 at 208 miles per hour.

The fans enjoyed a break from the racing by watching the Miss Hawaiian Tropic contest.  The nine stunning contestants wore evening gowns in the first part of the competition then showed off with the bikini portion of the challenge.  The enormous crowd cheered the girls on.

The IHRA Motor City Nationals will be at Milan Dragway July 7, 8 and 9.  This event will include 14 pre- registered Nitro Funny cars along with Top Fuel and more.

The next Skinny Kids Heads Up will be Friday August 4. - Chris Baxter
